When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve always written as a way to express myself because it’s in my blood. My family is full of talented writers, including my grandmother who was a newspaper columnist and my mama who is a storyteller and lyricist. Prior to attempting romantic fiction, I mostly wrote poetry which was humorous. I don’t like it when things get too sappy. After I finished the first book, Play With My Heart, I knew I had more stories to tell because the secondary characters kept bugging me to write their love stories.

What was your inspiration for Play With My Heart?
There are many things that inspired me to write Play With My Heart. I got the idea for the opening scene when I demolished a deck with my feet. It was my kickboxing training coming out (and some pent up aggression). Music also inspired me as I struggled (and still struggle) to learn guitar. In my dreams, I play like Liz and Eric Clapton. I’m a character-driver writer, so once I had the idea of Liz in my head, I let her tell me her side of the story. Then, Ian had to say his piece. I wanted to convey some Southern settings, mindsets and traditions through my writing, so the idea of a family saga was born from Liz & Ian’s story.

Were Liz and Ian modeled after real people?
Not really, but as with all characters, there are aspects of me in both of them. In thinking of British actors, I admit I kept picturing Hugh Grant and Colin Firth (too many Bridget Jones’ movies), but with the bod of Philip Winchester (yes, I know he’s American, but Stonebridge has a sexy British accent when I actually listen to what he’s saying).

Boxers or Briefs?
Boxer-briefs, but most of my heroes wear boxers if they bother with drawers at all.

What is next on your horizon?
The second of three Southern College Novellas, which are new adult romances, will release in August. It’s called Fall Rush and newsletter subscribers will get a sneak peek at the cover and blurb in the next newsletter. I’ll tease you with this: We have a sorority girl who needs to improve her reputation and a hot bartender who might make it difficult. It’s not what you think.

Will we see Ian and Liz again in another story?
Liz will make appearances in all of the Southland Romances as her siblings find their happily-ever-afters. Ian gets mentioned in passing, but he’s busy filming movies that make women drool. Liz also makes a cameo in another series I’m working on which is set in Quiet Cove, the fictional Georgia coastal town seen in Play With My Heart.

Excerpt

When they reached the front door of Danny’s house, Liz turned to Ian. “Thanks for the escort. Now, get back over there and enjoy your party. I hope I didn’t ruin it.”

You couldn’t ruin anything if you tried.” Ian leaned in and kissed her cheek. It was warm.

Next time, leave that shovel at home, ya here?” she said as a smile played at the corners of her full lips.

One day, I’ll pay you a compliment and you’ll accept it.”

You’re an actor. I might not believe anything that comes out of your mouth,” she said with a smirk and raised eyebrows.

He tsked. “So cynical. I wonder what made you that way?”

Liz tilted her head to one side and her smile broadened as she shrugged. Ian was caught in it, forgetting what he’d even said. There was something about her. Not one thing, but many little things, all of which added up to something really unexpected.

I’ve always been this way. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. I didn’t mean to imply that you aren’t a good actor. I honestly don’t know. But I Googled you and you’ve been at it a long time, so I bet you’re pretty talented.”

You Googled me?” Warmth spread through his chest and his own smile broadened. It was ridiculous to be so enamored by this Southern belle. Women searched for him online quite frequently, but he didn’t know those women. This one was standing a few feet away, breathing the same air. He was on the verge of asking her to dinner, but stopped himself just in time. If he couldn’t think of another option, she might be his caregiver and she definitely wouldn’t want to date him then.
